Travoprost is the generic term for a prostaglandin analog, useful in reducing high intraocular pressure (IOP) and to slow or stop the progress of open-angle glaucoma. It can be used in all ages, though young patients with high IOP or glaucoma are quite rare.

Most patients buy Travoprost under its widely-recognized brand names, Travatan or Travatan Z, though the medication is available in wide number of brand and generic names around the world. The difference between products, other than names, are only inactive ingredients; the active ingredient and its strength are identical.

How It Works

High IOP is caused by excess aqueous humour in the eye. In most cases the fluid builds up because it drains poorly, in which case patients may be advised to buy Travoprost. It should not be used when drainage of aqueous humour is physically blocked, such as due to injury.

High IOP can lead to glaucoma, which can ultimately lead to permanent vision impairment or blindness. Not everyone who has high IOP will develop glaucoma, but enough do that treatment of high IOP is strongly recommended.

Other factors that increase risk include:

  • Family history of high IOP or glaucoma
  • Over age 35
  • Unusually thin corneas
  • Black or Hispanic lineage
  • Menopause

Patients with high IOP very rarely have any symptoms. Without eye exams the majority of patients don't know anything is wrong until glaucoma begins to impair vision. Annual eye exams are highly advisable for anyone over age 35.

To be clear, patients should not buy Travoprost without first being diagnosed with high IOP or glaucoma by a doctor. Self-diagnosing is simply not possible with this condition.

How It's Used

This product comes in a vial with an eye dropper included. Depending on which brand is purchased the dropper may be built into the top of the vial or it may be removable. In both cases care should be taken to keep the dropper from contacting any other material, including hands. It should not be rinsed or otherwise cleaned.

Travoprost products are available in just one strength; 0.004%. Studies indicate that using Travoprost at higher doses or with greater frequency than once per day actually make the medication less effective at reducing high IOP.

Those who buy Travoprost find it's very easy to use:

  • Drops are best administered in the evening.
  • Thoroughly wash and dry hands.
  • Shake the vial well.
  • Open the vial, being careful that the dropper does not touch anything.
  • Apply a single drop to the affected eye(s).
  • Close eyes for one to two minutes, while gently applying pressure to the corner of the eye nearest the nose.

More detailed instructions are included with each product, and doctor instructions may deviate slightly from the above. Doctor instructions should always be followed.

Contact lenses should be removed prior to eye drop application, and should be left out for at least 15 minutes. Likewise other medicated eye drops should be administered at least 5 minutes before or after treatment. Eye drops that aren't medically necessary should generally be avoided during treatment. If applying ointments to the eyes this should be done last, after Travoprost and any other eye drops have been administered.

Treatment may continue for as long as it provides benefit, which may be for the remainder of life.
